Curved vs.Straight

The Boule Garden

Almost all of the lines in our garden are straight, many forming square or rectangular areas or rooms.  When I installed a portion of the garden that borders the woodland and stretches almost the entire length of the multiple “garden rooms” in the rear garden, I wanted something different.  So, here I decided to create a curved gravel path that somewhat mimics the flowing curvature of a stream.  The path begins as you pass through a red gate at one end and leads to the Hidcote folly and pool at the other end.

At the center of the path is an intersection marked by a large mill stone.  A right at this intersection takes you into the woodland and a left leads to a center hallway that separates two garden rooms.  Spaced along the path, and at the center of the mill stone, are granite spheres which were the basis for naming this section the “Boule Garden.”
