FAQ

  • What cameras do you use?

I am primarily a Nikon shooter using a full-frame Nikon D850 as my primary DSLR with a D810 as a backup. However I also love my Fujifilm X100V for shooting street photography and my Sony FX30 for video shooting. I use a Mavic Air 2S for drone work.

  • What camera is best for garden photography?

As someone once said…the best camera is the one you have with you when a photographic opportunity presents itself. Can you use a mobile phone for garden photography? Sure. But, if you want to have more control over your images, you’ll eventually want to move up to a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Look for a camera with good dynamic range. The very same quality you would look for in a good landscape camera.

  • If I can only afford one lens, what focal length should I get?

This is almost impossible to answer without knowing what type of shooting you do. For example, if you’re a street photographer you’d probably want a “wider” prime like a 24, 28, or 35mm lens. If you shoot landscapes you might want something like a 70-200mm zoom. When I find myself in a predicament where I can only carry one lens, I will often take my Nikkor 28-300mm zoom lens with me which covers lots of bases.

  • How long did it take you to build out your garden?

If you’re a gardener you’ll know that a garden is never really finished. However, we have been working on our garden here at Juniper Hill Farm for about twenty years. Because I have had to learn this hard lesson myself, I always caution new gardeners to factor your own aging into the design process and never let your garden grow so big that you’re faced with a maintenance nightmare at just the time in your life when you’d simply like to sit back and enjoy it.

  • Can I hire you?

Yes. I’m available for both garden and portrait photography. You can reach me here.

  • What photo editing software do you use?

I primarily use Lightroom and Photoshop although I will often use Capture One for studio work because of its superior responsiveness when shooting tethered. For video work, I use both Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

  • Do you use presets?

I’m not big on using LUTS or presets unless I have put them together myself. Yes, purchased presets can seem like one-click magic bullets but if you’re trying to develop your own style or “voice” then why would you want to apply someone else’s look to your own images? You can check out more of what I have to say about this HERE.
