Lumber

I pass this little outbuilding each day on my walk.  And, with the graveyard of cut timber in front, it always feels like the shed is slowly sinking, being overtaken and consumed by the huge logs, the very source from which it came.  The logs and stumps are a good reminder of the importance of lumber as a resource for building not only sheds but almost all of the houses, barns and outbuildings here in New England.  We are not known for stone houses and buildings here.  The plentiful granite field stone was used for building walls when the fields were cleared, not houses.  Lumber was the material of choice for building.  It was easy to work with and there was plenty of it.

This small hilltop farm that I pass each day has been around since the 1700’s.  Cattle still graze the rocky fields during the summer months.  I always try to have a brief conversation with them as I pass.  It’s hard to tell how many small outbuildings have been constructed on this farm over the years.  The shed in the photo looks like it could be nearing the end of its lifespan.
